In February, an immediate jeopardy citation was issued by CMS at Saint Vincent Hospital, part of Tenet Healthcare, located in Worcester, Massachusetts. This citation gravely pointed out the insufficiency of nursing staff, which had critically impacted five patients, resulting in the deaths of three. This distressing occurrence followed six complaints from the Massachusetts Nurses Association submitted to state and federal regulators since 2024. These complaints primarily revolved around patient safety and quality of care concerns.
As recent as December 2024, a complaint was raised claiming that insufficient staffing levels were to blame for the tragic death of two ICU patients in September. This claim was supported by a CMS statement of deficiencies obtained by Becker’s, which revealed three patients had unacceptably died between September and December 2024 due to improper monitoring or delayed treatment. The immediate jeopardy was first raised on February 4 and was promptly addressed and lifted by February 12. This was possible once the hospital put forth a correction plan that gained the approval of the Massachusetts Health Department.
Alongside these developments, Saint Vincent Hospital underwent a change in leadership with the resignation of Carolyn Jackson as CEO and the appointment of Denten Park as the new CEO on February 18. However, the nurse union alleges that a series of actions detailed in the correction plan have yet to be fully implemented. Further concerns were raised in May as the nurses filed an additional complaint to the state health department, CMS, and The Joint Commission citing ongoing safety concerns such as preventable falls and continued low staffing levels which contributed to delayed care. An investigation process was initiated again in June, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the state health department, according to an August 8 report.
Despite these allegations, the hospital maintains its dedication to providing high-quality care. As per a statement to Becker’s by a hospital spokesperson, the recent title of “Best Regional Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report confirms their commitment to high standard care for Central Massachusetts.
