Harnessing AI to Improve Nurse Efficiency and Patient Safety in Hospitals

Microsoft, in collaboration with Epic Systems and various healthcare systems, recently announced plans to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed specifically at nursing professionals.

The intended purpose of these tools is to reduce the incidence of nursing burnout, a significant factor plaguing the healthcare industry, and enhance the quality of care rendered to patients. Research indicates that understaffing in hospitals leads to increased infection rates, and these AI solutions target to address this issue by improving efficiency.

Mary Varghese Presti, Vice President of Portfolio Evolution and Incubation at Microsoft Health and Life Sciences, emphasized during a briefing that the uniqueness of their approach comes from focusing on nursing, in contrast to the multitude of AI tools centered around physicians.

On the issue of hospital safety, the American Hospital Association and health care performance improvement company, Vizient, report that hospitals are faring better in safety and quality measures, even under the pressures of the pandemic and an influx of patients with more severe illnesses. In a parallel vein, a publication in the American Journal of Infection Control notes that lower rates of infection prevention and control staffing correlate with higher incidences of healthcare-associated infections.

They propose a new online tool to guide an individualized approach to determining Infection Preventionist staffing rather than a single standardised ratio. On a global level, a recent report by the World Health Organization underscores the significant role vaccines play in curtailing antimicrobial resistance, estimating that the utilization of 44 vaccines against 24 pathogens can massively reduce deaths and costs associated with drug-resistant infections.

Both these topics highlight the importance and impact of resource allocation and innovative solutions on patient outcomes and safety.
