Ground-breaking Air Decontamination System Mitigates Microbial Infections in Medical Spaces

ActivePure Medical of the AP Sciences Group has achieved noteworthy success in reducing surface and floor microbial contamination in healthcare units. Their innovative air decontamination technologies are capable of effectively battling even multidrug-resistant organisms such as Candida auris (C. auris) and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB). This breakthrough was revealed at the IDWeek 2024 event held from October 16 to 19 in Los Angeles.

The first significant experiment was conducted between September 2023 and January 2024 with the cooperation of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. This study was aimed at analyzing the impact of ActivePure Technology-enabled Medical Guardians in a high acuity unit dealing with active C. auris infections. The multidrug resistance, extensive persistence on surfaces, and the ability to generate severe, often fatal infections, render C. auris a high-risk pathogen in hospitals. It is classified as an urgent threat by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), underscoring the dire requirement for efficient mechanisms to control and prevent its spread.

The next study was performed in collaboration with Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, to evaluate how the technology affects high-touch surface contamination in a 19-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). The results of these studies reiterate the system’s suitability for occupied spaces and align with already published data that shows a clear reduction in Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) due to decreased bacterial and fungal presence.

The path-breaking ActivePure Technology can reduce environmental contamination, in the air and on surfaces, in healthcare settings, effectively attending to the urgent needs of public health. Dr. Deborah Birx, the company’s Chief Medical & Science Advisor, noted the significant reduction in rates of C. auris patient colonization after the technology’s installation in a healthcare facility. A 67% decrease was recorded in patient colonization rates with C. auris after admission, comparing eight months of data before and after implementation of ActivePure Technology.

Acting as a semi-synthetic model of the planet’s organic disinfection processes, ActivePure Technology produces oxidizing particles that safeguard against environmental contamination threats. This technology was initially developed for space exploration but has evolved to minimize exposure to pathogens and reduce their presence by up to 99.9%. ActivePure Technology can be found in healthcare systems across various settings, including acute care, long-term care facilities, and commercial buildings.
