Exploring the Surge in Hospital Complaints in 2024: An Analysis of CMS Report Highlights

The fiscal year 2024 saw a startling surge in complaints lodged against hospitals, with an increase of 79% compared to the fiscal year 2019. Based on the data provided in the CMS report, released on the 6th of August 2024, over 14,500 complaints were recorded across the United States. This number represents an alarming trend as healthcare providers are confronted with an apparent decline in service standards or patient satisfaction.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which assesses state CMS survey agencies annually, revealed their findings about the adherence to national regulations within healthcare facilities. The report highlights the pressing issues state agencies face concerning resource allocation and workloads, which may have contributed to the marked increase in complaints. Shockingly, despite the mounting issues, these state agencies reportedly experienced no major changes in their funding since 2019.

Over the half-decade leading up to 2024, the complaints which necessitated formal investigation rose 31.3%. The lion’s share of the complaints were centered around nursing homes, with incidents totaling over 107,000 according to the report. The 2024 report further revealed that almost all the states failed to meet every federal performance standard during that year. Of all the states in the US, only four – Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota, and Rhode Island – were able to achieve all 14 required survey and intake measures.

Hospitals and health systems should be preparing for this alarming rise in complaints and scrutinizing their services, especially considering the concerning rise in high-risk pregnancies and the simultaneous shutdown of many labor and delivery units. Additionally, the reinstatement of the ‘Safer Childhood Vaccines’ task force by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is another crucial aspect organizations should be considering.

This report serves as a crucial wake-up call for healthcare providers, regulatory bodies, and policy-makers alike to reassess their strategies and approaches. It emphasizes the crucial need to address these complaints, to maintain high standards of patient satisfaction and ultimately, to ensure the reliable delivery of effective healthcare services.
