Examining Infection Prevention in Laboratory Settings: Insights from a Continuing Medical Education Workshop

At the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), the PA Sangma International Hospital’s Microbiology Department successfully held a Continuing Medical Education (CME) workshop. Titled, ‘Good Laboratory Practices and Infection Control in a Tertiary Care Hospital’, the workshop convened in the Central Auditorium of the University.

Attendees included Dr RC Deka, former director of AIIMS New Delhi; Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM; Dr RK Sharma, Advisor USTM, and a host of other distinguished guests and participants. Dr Manasi Bhattacharjee, Dean of Academics at the Department of Physiology AIIMS Guwahati, served as the inaugural session’s chief guest where she underscored the crucial role of good laboratory practice in healthcare. Other noted figures, including Padma Shri Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariah, Pro Vice-Chancellor of USTM, and Dr. Biraj Kumar Das, Principal of PIMC, also addressed the inaugural event.

The workshop’s main objective, according to Dr. Debarati Saha from the Department of Microbiology PIMC, was to equip healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and skills to maintain safety and quality standards in laboratory practices and prevent infections. Various experts shared valuable insights: Dr. (Prof) Lahari Saikia discussed the ‘Principles of Good Laboratory Practice’, Dr. Moushumi Saikia explained the ‘Fundamentals of Quality Control’, and Dr. (Prof) Muktanjalee Deka tackled ‘Quality and safety aspects in Histopathology Laboratory’.

Meanwhile, Dr. Debarati Saha riveted attendees with an ‘Overview of Quality Control and Infection Control in Microbiology Laboratory’, and Dr. Deepjyoti Kalita provided a comprehensive discussion about the ‘Establishment of BMW Management & Hospital Infection Control Program from Scratch: Challenges & Way Forward’. The workshop also included a presentation by Dr Rashmisnata Barman on ‘Sterilization in Prevention of Hospital Acquired Infection’ and an address by Dr. Krishna Gogoi on the ‘Overview of Hospital Infection Control’.
