Enhancing Infection Prevention with Patient-Centered Isolation Strategies: A Framework Proposal

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens pose significant threats to global health. Challenges associated with these threats have intensified with the rise of SARS-CoV-2 and an expanding immunocompromised population. Isolation precautions form a critical part of infection prevention control (IPC) strategies, but their arbitrary usage can strain resources and impede patient well-being, necessitating a more nuanced strategy. This article proposes an approach to optimize isolation strategies by incorporating patient risk factors, pathogenic elements, and healthcare facility resources. This tailored method targets to balance IPC efficacy, match patient needs and amplify resource efficiency.

The indiscriminate application of isolation precautions can lead to resource strain, compromise patient experience and pose unintended consequences such as increased workload for healthcare workers and patient psychological distress. The one-size-fits-all approach does not align with the particular risks different pathogens pose, the variations in patient conditions, or the limitations specific to healthcare facilities. Emerging MDR bacteria, novel viral pathogens, and the expanding immunocompromised population demand more efficient and targeted isolation strategies.

Developing a patient-centered approach aims to create a more adaptable, evidence-based, and resource-efficient model for prioritizing isolation precautions. This approach uses factors like patient risk, underlying health conditions, pathogen-related factors like virulence and persistence, and healthcare facility constraints for prioritizing isolation precautions. Utilizing advanced analytics like machine learning and omics-based risk assessments alongside infection prevention leadership can optimize the use of isolation protocols while ensuring quality patient care.

MDR bacteria may transmit through several routes in healthcare facilities, requiring stringent isolation measures for prevention. The prevalence of such pathogen spread and emergent and re-emergent threats, alongside immunocompromised patients, creates a significant challenge for healthcare facilities. This situation yields an urgent need to adopt a personalized approach for prioritizing patient admission using a goldilocks blend of clinical, epidemiological, and institutional factors.

Patient-centered infection control emphasizes tailored strategies that consider individual patient characteristics, increasing microbial threats, and healthcare facility-specific factors. This approach moves beyond traditional one-size-fits-all protocols, aiming for more rationalized use of facilities and opportunities and better patient outcomes.

Emerging technologies, such as AI-driven risk assessments, and the rise of omics technologies have revolutionized the field of medical research. This approach offers profound insights into complex interactions between hosts and pathogens, laying the groundwork for personalized medicine approaches for diagnosing, treating and preventing infectious diseases.

In essence, integrating a patient-centered strategy into IPC tactics can create a more flexible, evidence-based, and efficient model. As a result, isolation strategies become more precise, effective, and conducive to better patient outcomes.
