Embracing a Learning Attitude to Thrive as a Non-Nurse – Angel Mueller

Entering the field of Infection Prevention without a nursing background could have been a daunting challenge for Angel Mueller, especially in a profession where many of her colleagues were seasoned nurses. However, Angel’s experience was quite different. In a recent interview, she shared how she navigated her role as the first non-nurse in her Infection Prevention department and how her approach to learning and collaboration allowed her to thrive in this environment.

When asked if she felt the need to prove herself or if others were surprised by her non-nursing background, Angel was clear that she never felt out of place or questioned in her role. Instead, she always felt welcomed by her colleagues. Angel attributes this to the mindset she adopted from the very beginning: a learning attitude. Rather than positioning herself as an authority figure, Angel focused on learning from the frontline clinicians—nurses and providers—who were deeply involved in patient care. She understood that effective Infection Prevention required close collaboration with these professionals, and she made it her priority to work alongside them, integrating infection prevention practices into their daily routines.

Angel’s humility and willingness to learn played a key role in her acceptance within the team. By approaching her work with the goal of understanding and supporting the roles of others, she was able to build strong, respectful relationships with her nursing colleagues. She didn’t come in with the intent of telling them how to do their jobs; instead, she sought to learn from their expertise while offering her own knowledge in Infection Prevention. This collaborative approach not only fostered mutual respect but also enriched her understanding of how to implement effective infection control measures in a real-world clinical setting.

Angel’s experience demonstrates that success in Infection Prevention—or any healthcare role—does not depend solely on one’s background or title. What matters more is the attitude and approach one brings to the job. By embracing a learning attitude and prioritizing collaboration, Angel was able to seamlessly integrate into a team of nursing professionals and contribute meaningfully to the organization’s Infection Prevention efforts. Her story is a powerful reminder that openness to learning and respect for the expertise of others can break down barriers and lead to success, even in fields where traditional backgrounds may differ.
