Elevating The Action Against Sepsis: CDC Launches Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced the release of the Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements, an essential tool intended to bolster U.S hospitals’ capability to promptly identify and effectively combat sepsis, thereby improving survival rates. The move reflects CDC’s commitment to mitigating the severe impact of sepsis, a life-threatening systemic response to infection that accounts for one in three deaths occurring in hospitals every year, according to new CDC data.

The agency is encouraging all American hospitals to establish their own sepsis programs, making use of these new core elements to strive for heightened standards in sepsis treatment. The recently concluded CDC survey of 5,221 hospitals revealed that while 73% have established sepsis teams, only 55% offer dedicated time for sepsis program leaders to oversee these vital initiatives. The swift diagnosis and prompt treatment of sepsis, including the provision of antibiotics, are key determinants of patient survival. Yet, sepsis remains a major challenge, largely due to issues concerning awareness and timely detection.

Consequently, the seven-element framework furnished by the CDC is designed to guide hospitals in enhancing early recognition and treatment, thus saving more lives. Compiled as a management guide, the Sepsis Core Elements provides insights on organizing hospital staff and resources efficiently to reduce sepsis incidents and increase survival rates. It promotes greater correlation across various hospital departments, facilitating the multidimensional care necessary for effective sepsis management.

According to the CDC’s 2022 National Healthcare Safety Network Annual Survey, just 55% of hospitals reported the integration of Antibiotic Stewardship Programs, signifying a significant scope for improving this key component of patient recovery from sepsis.

The newly introduced Sepsis Core Elements, inspired by CDC’s successful Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship program, encourage all types of hospitals to build robust sepsis initiatives, incorporating strong leadership, expertise, tracking, education, among others. This set of guidelines will equip healthcare providers to readily identify and treat sepsis patients, complementing the prevailing clinical guidelines.

Coinciding with Sepsis Awareness Month, the release of the Sepsis Core Elements forms a crucial part of the CDC’s ongoing Get Ahead of Sepsis campaign, focused on educating healthcare professional, patients and caregivers about steps to prevent infections potentially leading to sepsis.
