Elevating Patient Safety & Quality Care: Sutter Hospitals Receive ‘A’ Grade from The Leapfrog Group

Sutter Health, a renowned healthcare network, has marked another significant achievement in patient safety and quality care with 15 of its hospitals receiving an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group. Renowned for its independent and non-profit approach towards patient safety, The Leapfrog Group awards this prestigious grade on the premise of outstanding performance in ensuring safety and top-tier care for patients. The accomplishment is a testament to Sutter Health’s unflinching dedication to safeguarding the well-being of the patients and maintaining high-quality care, according to Dr. William Isenberg, Sutter Health’s Chief Medical and Quality Officer. He views the ‘A’ grade as an indicator of the steadfast focus of their teams on delivering the safest possible care to their communities, and a reflection of the immense trust their patients bestow on them. Furthermore, the award signifies Sutter Health’s shared goal of fostering healthier and safer neighborhoods across the geographical expanse of California.

To enhance their performance in subsequent evaluation cycles, even Sutter’s hospitals that did not receive an “A” grade are implementing work plans. These plans draw inspiration from the best practices established by their Sutter counterparts which have consistently obtained ‘A’ grades. Indeed, one of the shining examples from Sutter’s network is Mills-Peninsula Medical Center which has consistently obtained the ‘Straight A’ designation over six grading periods running back to Spring 2023. Mills-Peninsula’s emphasis on patient safety in all spheres and their fostering of a culture that prioritizes patient safety, driving high caregiver engagement is something that they take immense pride in. Their CEO, Darian Harris, attributes this remarkable achievement to their team’s commitment to delivering excellence every day, thereby honoring the proud legacy of Mills-Peninsula.

The leadership at the hospital also applauds their strong safety culture as a key influencer in maintaining the Leapfrog ‘A’ grade. Elizabeth Asifo, Director of Quality and Patient Safety, expresses that a significant amount of pride lies in their safety culture as they themselves are privileged to receive exceptional, safe care within their community.

Sutter hospital campuses were awarded varying grades, including A, B, and C from The Leapfrog Group. As an organization with a high-reliability index, Sutter is consistently promoting a culture of safety, enabling everyone to voice potential safety concerns. This high reliability extends beyond a mere process, serving as a promise to deliver safer, more consistent care to each patient, at every instance.

The Leapfrog Group’s ratings are based on a comprehensive evaluation of more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, infections, and the established systems in hospitals to prevent them. It’s the only rating system that solely focusses on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries, providing a fully transparent, peer-reviewed grading of hospitals, available to the public for free. The grades are updated biannually, during the spring and fall seasons. For a more detailed view of the grades, one can visit HospitalSafetyGrade.org.

Access to urgent, primary and specialized care has been expanded to the suburbs of Sacramento with the opening of a multi-specialty facility by Sutter Health.
