Dr. Alan Harmatz: The New Leader Spearheading Infection Prevention at Medical City Dallas

Internationally respected healthcare leader, Dr. Alan Harmatz, is poised to commence his roles as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Medical City Dallas starting August 16. As CMO, Dr. Harmatz will undertake several crucial duties designed to enhance both the quality of care and patient safety. He will also be in charge of infection prevention, risk management, and medical staff services across a range of key healthcare facilities under the Medical City Dallas banner. These include Medical City Dallas, Medical City Women’s Hospital Dallas, Medical City Children’s Hospital, Medical City Heart Hospital, and Medical City Spine Hospital.

Dr. Harmatz comes with an excellent reputation for fostering collaborative relationships with nurses, doctors, and colleagues to drive progress in patient care. Chris Mowan, the president and CEO of Medical City Dallas, commended his commitment to ensuring top-tier patient care. Mowan expressed confidence that Dr. Harmatz’s leadership will continue to distinguish their hospitals as the preferred healthcare choice not only in North Texas but also more broadly.

Before transitioning to Medical City Dallas, Dr. Harmatz made noteworthy contributions as the CMO of HCA Healthcare’s Florida Brandon Hospital. There, he not only improved patient safety but also expanded hospital services and strengthened engagement with physicians. One of his significant achievements includes the creation of a novel software program that employs data and analytics to diminish medical complications. Today, this data-driven tool is utilized in HCA Healthcare hospitals around the nation. Dr. Harmatz also spearheaded the launch of a comprehensive stroke program and displayed his adeptness in disaster response and recovery by leading the Florida hospital through several hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Harmatz, a board-certified plastic surgeon, attended New York Medical College and Pace University for his undergraduate studies. His educational journey also includes a general surgery residency at Maine Medical Center and a plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
