Noticing a consistent decline in cases, the health system from Charlotte, N.C., has decided to lift certain visitor restrictions and alter masking rules, effective from 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 21. The modifications will first be introduced in Charlotte-based Atrium Health hospitals, where restrictions on visitors aged 12 and under will be eliminated. Alongside, the health system is rendering masking optional across all its facilities, keeping in mind the exclusion of a few specific sections where stricter infection prevention measures continue to be crucial. Such regions encompass units catering to treatment for cancer patients and those with suppressed immunity, alongside emergency department waiting spaces and triage zones.
Despite the relaxation of the policy, masks will remain available for those who prefer to use them. Dr. Katie Passaretti, vice president and chief epidemiologist of Atrium Health, attributed the dip in respiratory illness cases to multiple factors such as vaccinations, heightened awareness, better hygiene practices, and certain seasonal factors. Despite the optimistic trajectory, Passaretti underscores the need for continuing vigilance and readiness to adapt to any unforeseen shifts in the situation. The organization’s key objective of furnishing safe and efficacious patient care remains its guiding principle, with its decisions reaffirming its concerted fight against infectious conditions.
To keep sickness at bay, healthcare leaders recommend consistent hand hygiene- regular washing with soap and warm water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Frequent touching of facial features like eyes, nose, or mouth should be circumvented, and individuals not feeling well are urged to stay home. Finally, Atrium Health strongly advocates for patients, staff, and the broader community to stay current on all recommended vaccinations, including those for COVID-19, flu, RSV, and beyond.
