Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as among the 455 hospitals nationwide exhibiting an astounding zero-rate for Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infections in 2024. This data comes from the healthcare-associated infections dataset maintained by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. This remarkable achievement underscores JRMC’s dedication to patient safety and reliability.
C. diff is a bacterium known for causing infections in the colon. These infections are typically a by-product of antibiotic overuse, causing serious long-term harm if left untreated. As per data shared by JRMC Quality and Risk Manager, Jenna Bredahl, only 11 outpatient cases of C. diff have been treated at JRMC since July 2024, but notably, there have been zero hospital-acquired cases.
Bredahl reiterates the medical center’s thorough review of each detected case of C. diff and honours the trust patients place in its care. Infection control at JRMC is multifaceted – it combines UV sanitization methods to eliminate bacteria across all spheres of patient care, rigorous handwashing and other hygiene procedures, apt lab testing, detailed treatment protocols, and strong isolation safeguards for highly contagious infections like C. diff.
Another pillar in JRMC’s infection control strategy is its environmental services (EVS) department, entrusted with maintaining cleanliness across all areas in the hospital. Their critical role is acknowledged by Nicole Mack, JRMC quality review and infection prevention nurse, who states, ‘Without an excellent EVS team, there is no infection control at JRMC.’.
