The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified Candida auris, a potent yeast species, as an urgent antimicrobial resistance threat infiltrating US hospitals. Initially detected in Japan in 2009 and reported in the US in 2016, an alarming resurgence of this drug-resistant fungal infection is presently uncoiling, borne from versatile sources. This escalation finds its basis in a fresh US research distributed in the American Journal of Infection Control, with corroboration from CDC’s recent statement underscoring the gravity of this fungal outbreak.
Jason Tetro, an Edmonton-based microbiologist who specialises in emerging pathogens, dubbed Candida Auris as a normal coloniser of the skin that could lead to severe infections if it breaches the mucous membrane regions or bloodstream. The research trail spotlighting the enhanced spread of C. auris focused on a Miami-based, expansive health system. It underlined an unnerving rise in clinical cases from five in 2019 to 115 in 2023, propelling a whopping 2,200 percent jump within only four years.
The primary concern hinges on multiple C. auris strains displaying resistance to standard treatments and even resisting common disinfectants or cleaners. In response to these cleaning measures, Tetro highlighted the yeast’s unique protective outer shell that shields it against most cleaners, making potent cleaners like hydrogen peroxide or bleach essential for its eradication. Although the mortality rate of Candida auris predominantly hovers around 50-60%, Tetro affirms that it’s not a significant worry for healthy individuals.
However, those grappling with any illness or warranting hospital admission need to remain on high alert. As the rise in C. auris cases continues unabated, it’s crucial to contemplate preventive measures. CDC has recommended isolation and contact precautions, while highlighting the importance of early identification of C. auris colonised patients and timely execution of infection prevention strategies for mitigating the incidence of bloodstream infections. With such an explosive rise in C. auris incidences, preventive measures from the government’s end are crucial to safeguard the general public, thereby keeping this grave healthcare concern at bay.
