Building a Foundation: Early Career in a Regional Hospital System – Angel Mueller

Angel Mueller discusses the early stages of her career in Infection Prevention, specifically focusing on her first position within a regional hospital system. She explains that her role was part of a three-hospital regional system, which was integrated into a larger health network. This setup provided a unique environment that was neither too small nor overwhelmingly large, offering a manageable yet diverse range of experiences across the different campuses.

The three hospitals in the system were located within a 10 to 15-minute drive from each other, which made it easier for Angel and her colleagues to coordinate and oversee Infection Prevention efforts across the region. This proximity allowed for efficient collaboration and communication among the team members, which was crucial for maintaining consistent infection control practices across multiple sites.

Angel also highlights that she was not working in isolation; there were two other Infection Preventionists on the team alongside her. Starting as a part-time Infection Preventionist, Angel was able to contribute effectively while learning the intricacies of the profession. This collaborative environment provided her with the support and mentorship needed to grow in her role, laying a strong foundation for her future career in Infection Prevention. The experience of working within this regional system was instrumental in helping Angel develop her skills and knowledge, preparing her for the more complex challenges she would face later in her career.
