Bracing for Respiratory Viruses Unraveling: Hospitals Gearing up for ‘The Big Three’ This Winter

Health care networks are gearing up for the anticipated surge in respiratory illnesses that include COVID-19, influenza, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), collectively identified as the ‘Big Three,’ set to predominate this winter season. Although North Carolina records indicate a decline in hospital admissions for COVID-19 and Emergency Department visits due to respiratory problems as of October, an apprehension is blossoming due to the expected circulation of ‘The Big Three.’

According to WakeMed infection prevention specialist Jessica Dixon, while COVID-19 still remains the predominant virus they encounter, the recent weeks have marked a surge in emergency department trips related to illnesses resembling influenza. Additionally, there is an observable increase in RSV cases over the last month, a trend they expect to continue.

RSV is significantly risky for children, particularly infants, as it can lead to compounding health issues. However, State Health Director Dr. Betsey Tilson expresses a ray of hope, stating that the healthcare system is better equipped now to handle these wide-ranging threats. As she emphasises, ‘We have the tools to protect people from COVID and flu and RSV this year.’ These include up-to-date vaccines, treatment plans if individuals procure influenza, RSV vaccinations for those over 60 and pregnant women, along with preventative medications for infants. Dr. Tilson also promotes individuals to take advantage of free at-home COVID-19 test kits which are accessible for order.
