Beyond Respiratory: Exploring the Multi-Systemic Impact of COVID-19

Recently, a commentary by Dr. Amesh Adalja in MedPage Today argued that treating COVID-19 similarly to other respiratory viruses is a flawed approach given the virus’s broader effects on multiple organ systems. This viewpoint challenges the conventional understanding of COVID-19, highlighting the need for a nuanced strategy in managing the virus. Unlike respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or influenza, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, impacts every organ system. Consequently, it is more deadly and causes long-term disabilities unlike other respiratory viruses.

Further, it predominantly spreads from asymptomatic carriers, making it a public health challenge. The impacts of SARS-CoV-2 are felt strongly in healthcare systems and economies. For instance, the UK has seen an increase of 700,000 people living with chronic illnesses since the pandemic’s onset, translating to a similar decrease in workforce participation. A Brookings Institute estimate from 2022 cites up to 4 million people in the US were unable to work due to long COVID.

These figures underscore the necessity for optimal vaccines and measures to curb virus spread. To this end, the COVID-19 antiviral, Paxlovid, holds promise but is underutilized and resistance to it has been observed. Moreover, the CDC needs to push unequivocally for COVID-19 vaccinations while emphasizing protection of the vulnerable and enhancing isolation requirements. The agency must also advocate for increased ventilation standards and the use of N95 masks for all airborne pathogens in preparation for future pandemic occurrences. This article underscores the pressing need to look beyond COVID-19 as solely a respiratory illness and reconsider how we approach its containment and management.
