The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 7,000 cases in the previous year, marking a substantial leap from just a few years prior. Dr. David Perlin, the chief scientific officer at the Center for Discovery and Innovation at Hackensack Meridian Health, forewarns of the extensive transmission risk of this colonizer. Its inherent capacity to habour on skin, persist on physical surfaces like bedrails, catheters, and the ability to withstand extensive periods of time significantly heightens its potential to spread. Perlin highlights that patients with major underlying illnesses remain the most susceptible demographic for the infection.
A medical review published by the Hackensack Meridian Health last month stressed that Candida auris is exhibiting increasing levels of resistance to existing antifungal drugs, at times reaching superbug status when it becomes untreatable. This difficulty in treatability is compounded by outdated diagnostic tools that often misidentify the infection, leading to delayed treatment.
