APIC’s Call for Legislative Intervention: The Necessity to Halt the Resurgence of Measles in the U.S

The recent measles-linked fatality in Texas has sparked renewed apprehension regarding the critical outcome of plummeting vaccination rates and misinformation proliferation. Once considered eradicated from the United States’ epidemiological landscape, measles is witnessing a disturbing rebound, with over 150 reported cases escalating rapidly. A public health crisis of this magnitude is not unforeseen but rather avertable with prompt action.

In a direct response to the crisis, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) issued an open plea to state legislators, advocating for the fortification of vaccine mandates to curb the potential of expanding measles epidemics.

A tragic loss occurred in Lubbock, Texas, where a child succumbed to a preventable disease that the U.S eradicated a quarter of century ago. This marks the first casualty from measles since 2015, which glaringly underscores the perils associated with declining vaccination rates, prevailing misinformation, and policy inadequacies.

Contrary to a popular misconception of being just another mild pediatric illness, measles is indeed a virulent and potentially lethal virus. It possesses the ability to remain active in an unoccupied room for up to two hours subsequent to the departure of the infected person. Alarmingly, up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals exposed to an infected person can catch the virus. Its debilitating consequences are particularly severe for children below five years, who face an increased risk of severe complications, such as pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reinforces the safe, efficacious nature of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. A single MMR vaccine dose provides 93% protection and two doses offer 97% protection against measles. Unfortunately, despite this robust scientific backing of the vaccine’s efficacy, misinformation continues to pervade, inciting vaccine skepticism, and significantly reducing immunization rates.

The link between declining vaccination rates and surges in measles cases isn’t conjectural; it is a well-documented correlation. Communities with robust immunization programs rarely face measles outbreaks. However, measles outbreaks have increasingly been reported in regions where exemptions from vaccine mandates are on the rise.

The current Texas measles outbreak, which already counts more than 150 infected individuals, is a manifestation of the softened state vaccine laws and eroded public trust in immunization. The resurgence of measles isn’t a product of scientific ambiguity, but rather a result of misinformation spread and legislative negligence to prioritize public safety.

APIC implores all individuals to believe public health experts and infection preventionists, and not fall prey to misleading information online. It’s crucial to ensure you, your children, and your loved ones are up-to-date on all recommended vaccines. Precarious times like these highlight the urgent need for immediate legislative intervention to halt the proliferation of measles and safeguard the most vulnerable demographic segments.
