Analysis of Hospital Infection Prevention Scores in Illinois: The Leapfrog Report Insights

In a recent insight from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit that grades hospital safety procedures at a national scale, it has been found out that approximately 25% of Illinois hospitals have procured ‘A’ grades for the fall season. The grading system considered several factors, from the prevention of medical mishaps to the mitigation of accidents and infections. Understanding these factors, especially in the context of Infection Prevention, carries high importance for infection prohibition professionals across the large scale of healthcare in hospitals.

Noteworthy in this report are certain hospitals in Chicago, with approximately 18% earning an ‘A’ grade out of the 22 eligible. Measurements taken into account include rates of bloodstream infections associated with intravenous lines, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, and catheter-related urinary tract infections. The group employs similar criteria to those used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

For the first time, this fall’s scores consider data from the post-pandemic era. Prevention of infections in hospitals accelerated during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but thankfully, there has been a visible downward trajectory for the graded hospitals. In Illinois, as well as on a national scale, there has been a robust initiative by hospital leaders to diminish these infection rates.

Given the value of these grades in instilling trust in patients, fostering tangible relationships with community members is paramount, according to Dr. Kimberly Darey, president of Elmhurst Hospital. She emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement despite having a stellar score card, advocating for a growth mindset in the healthcare segment.

While the celebration of high performance is crucial, hospitals such as the University of Chicago Medical Center, also emphasize the importance of tracking and reporting risky events as part of their everyday discourse on infection management protocols. The engagement of the entire hospital team can potentially contribute to maintaining the highest standards of safety and can be instrumental in preventing hazardous situations.

Taking an example from St. Bernard Hospital that effectively used Leapfrog data as a blueprint to make significant improvements, creating a sustainable safety approach is necessary, especially for safety-net hospitals facing financial strains. Their investment in a digital hand hygiene monitoring system post a low-ranking ‘F’ in 2021, shows long-term commitment to elevating patient safety.

Nevertheless, given the unruly times of labor shortages and heightened patient complaints, prudent monitoring of infection control measures remains crucial to maintain high safety standards, keep infections in check and contribute to the overall patient experience in a hospital setting.
